The Ministry of Culture, Historical Heritage and Sport is celebrating the centenary of the literary magazine 'Litoral', founded in 1926 by Manuel Altolaguirre and Emilio Prados, as part of the activities marking the centenary of the Generation of '27'. The celebrations, in collaboration with the Cultural Centre of the Generation of '27' in the Province of Málaga, will include a series of events and a facsimile edition of the publication that originated from the 'Sur' printing workshops.
The facsimile edition, curated by hispanist James Valender, a professor-researcher at the Linguistic and Literary Studies Centre of El Colegio de México, will compile the first nine issues of the literary magazine, published between 1926 and 1929. This initiative, spearheaded by the Biblioteca de Andalucía, underscores the modernity of a group of writers who transformed Málaga into one of the major capitals of the Generation of '27'.
“The magazine 'Litoral' became the great voice of the Generation of '27, serving as a platform for then-young writers such as Rafael Alberti, Federico García Lorca, and Luis Cernuda to publish their first poetry collections,” stated Patricia del Pozo, the Minister of Culture, Historical Heritage and Sport. “In addition to this role, it also provided a vigorous space for the convergence of literature and other artistic expressions.”
The informative sessions titled 'Málaga impresora. One hundred years of the magazine 'Litoral'', which are free to attend until capacity is reached, will commence on 20 October at 18:30. The opening lecture will be delivered by Luis Melero Mascañeras, a professor at the University of Málaga, discussing the inner history of the literary magazine. This will be followed by a talk entitled 'A gallery for avant-garde art' by writer and artistic curator Alfredo Taján.
The following day, also at 18:30, at the Cultural Centre of the Generation of '27', writer and journalist Guillermo Busutil will present a lecture titled 'Málaga, the city of '27'. This will be followed by a literary walk through the Málaga of the magazine 'Litoral', scheduled for 21 October at 19:30, led by José Antonio Mesa Toré, a poet and director of the Centre of the Generation of '27'.
This free activity has limited capacity, requiring prior reservation via email at centenariolitoral2026@gmail.com. The events are coordinated by Eva Díaz Pérez, curator of the activities organised by the Ministry of Culture, Historical Heritage and Sport for the centenary of the Generation of '27'.
