Álvaro Queipo calls for change in Spain and Asturias ahead of elections

Álvaro Queipo, president of the Popular Party (PP) in Asturias, stated today in Gijón that the general elections scheduled for 29 November represent "an opportunity to decide what future we want for our country." He stressed that both Spain and Asturias are in need of "a new phase after so many years of scandals, mismanagement, and a government focused solely on its own interests."

Queipo argued that it is essential for "politics to address the real problems of Spaniards, for institutions to serve everyone, and for governance to mean managing, fulfilling commitments, and providing solutions." He asserted that this is what the Popular Party represents, under the leadership of Alberto Núñez Feijóo, aiming to regain trust, improve management, and build a better future with more opportunities. He noted that Asturias has many reasons to seek this change.

The PP leader spoke at a meeting of the local PP board in Gijón, alongside party spokesperson in the Senate, Alicia García; the city's deputy mayor, Ángela Pumariega; and the president of the Gijón PP, Andrés Ruiz. Queipo highlighted the significance of the commitment made today by Alberto Núñez Feijóo to maintain the revaluation of pensions in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI), aimed at protecting the purchasing power of pensioners and ensuring the system's viability for future generations.

He pointed out that Gijón serves as a clear example of the consequences of the Spanish government's neglect of Asturias, citing issues such as the Jove road, the Lloreda-Veriña dual carriageway, the rail plan, and international gauge. Queipo remarked that "we cannot forget the responsibilities of the Principality's government, which has neither raised its voice to defend Gijón residents against Sánchez's government nor fulfilled its own commitments."

Queipo reiterated that the PP's project aims to address real issues, such as housing, taxes, and the cost of living, and to govern for all, not just a select few. "Alberto Núñez Feijóo has been preparing this alternative government for Spain for years," he added. "In Asturias, we are also ready," he emphasised, noting that during the recent state of the region debate, the PP presented 83 measures organised into 20 areas of action to offer more opportunities, better management, and strengthen regional identity.

He concluded by stating that in these times of polarisation and trivialisation of politics, a project that moves away from noise and focuses on the essentials is more necessary than ever: to address the real problems of Gijón, Asturias, and Spain, and to build a better future together.
